A shooting Saturday in Ensenada Baja California Mexico has left at least 10 people dead, and nine others injured. The shooting occurred during the second day of Cachanillazo, an annual two-day off-road racing event held in dune buggies.

Videos have surfaced across social media showing stricken competitors laying next to their vehicles. The shooting reportedly began when the participants were stopped at a gas station at 2:18 pm in San Vicente, near Ensenada. Multiple videos of the incident and its aftermath have racked up millions of views on Twitter, and the raw footage is harrowing.

According to Mexican journalist Alfredo Alvarez, the shooting was the result of a confrontation between the Arellano Felix Cartel, CAF, and the Sinaloa Cartel. Members of the Sinaloa cartel were apparently targeting a member of the CAF, who was also under investigation by the United States for drug trafficking. He was reportedly among those killed in the shooting.

“The roads and towns that for decades saw families and friends pass through in off-road adventure vehicles, today bear witness to executions of crime,” said Mexican attorney Gustavo de Hoyos Walther in Spanish. “What happened today at #Ensenada has to stop.”

According to Reuters, Baja California State Attorney General Ricardo Ivan Carpio Sanchez has commissioned a special group to investigate the shooting.

Ensenada is located just two hours away from San Diego, and this shooting is a tragic reminder that the Mexican cartels remain a scary and potent threat.
